A crane safety checklist helps a site team turn an approved lifting plan into practical checks before work starts. For UAE construction and industrial projects, the crane, lifting accessories, people and working area must all suit the actual operation. A completed form cannot make an unsuitable lift safe.
Use the checks below during planning and the pre-lift briefing. The responsible lifting team must apply the manufacturer’s instructions, the project’s approved procedures and requirements of the authority governing the site.
Before booking: verify the load and lifting arrangement
- Verified weight: obtain reliable load information, including lifting accessories and any deductions required by the crane’s load chart. Do not rely on a visual estimate.
- Dimensions and lifting points: confirm the centre of gravity, approved lifting points and whether the item needs specialist handling.
- Pickup and placement: record the working radius, required height, load route and clearances throughout the movement.
- Crane configuration: check the relevant load chart for the proposed boom, counterweight, support arrangement and operating sector.
If the placement point or weight changes, stop and refer the change for review. A different radius can change the suitable equipment even when the load stays the same.
Check access, ground support and the working area
Confirm gate widths, turning space, delivery timing and the area needed for assembly and support. Assess underground services, voids, excavations, recently filled ground and nearby structures. Ground support and matting must be selected through the lifting plan and competent assessment; surface appearance alone is insufficient.
- Identify overhead lines and other obstructions, with clearances and controls agreed before mobilisation.
- Provide the planned crane setup area and a stable, clear landing area.
- Establish exclusion zones for the load route, counterweight movement and other identified hazards.
- Coordinate other trades and traffic so they do not enter the controlled area.
Review equipment records and the lifting team
Match inspection documents to the actual crane and accessories by their identification numbers. Check validity, inspection scope, recorded defects and any use restrictions. Confirm which certification and personnel requirements apply to the particular site rather than assuming one certificate covers every UAE project.
Verify the operator’s competence for the machine and identify the lift supervisor, riggers and designated signal person. Complete the pre-start and rigging checks
The operator should complete the prescribed pre-use checks, including the condition and operation of controls, ropes, hooks, brakes, supports and safety devices. Record and resolve defects through the site procedure. Never bypass a warning or safety device to continue a lift.
The rigging team should inspect accessories and check their identification, rated capacity, configuration, sling angles and compatibility with the load. Protect vulnerable load edges as specified in the rigging arrangement. Damaged or unidentified accessories must be removed from use.
Brief the crew and monitor the lift
- Explain the sequence, route, landing arrangement and individual responsibilities.
- Test radios or agreed signals before starting. Stop if essential communication is lost.
- Check forecast and measured weather conditions against applicable limits. Review the weather planning guide before exposed lifts.
- Keep people clear of suspended loads and maintain the planned exclusion zones.
- Stop if the load behaves unexpectedly, the ground moves, a warning occurs or conditions depart from the plan. Obtain a competent review before restarting.
Close out the operation
Confirm that the load is stable and secured before releasing accessories. Shut down and secure the crane using the model-specific instructions. Record defects, incidents, near misses and changes that may affect the next operation.
